SNP MSP’s Toblerone motion is mocked
Colin Beattie believes that scaling down popular bar is an example of Brexit
An MSP has been ridiculed for using Scottish Parliament time and money to blame Brexit for changes to Toblerone.
Colin Beattie, of the SNP, asked his fellow parliamentarians for support on an official motion he lodged offering “condolences” to those mourning changes to the confectionery.
The motion says the changes are “emblematic of the devastating consequences that Brexit could bring” and called for Government intervention.
It emerged earlier this month that the makers of Toblerone have widened the gaps between the chocolate bar’s distinctive triangular chunks in an effort to avoid putting its prices up.
Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said: “Given the grief Mr Beattie is suffering over the scaling down of Toblerone, the Scottish Conservatives pledge today to buy him some good Scots chocolate, like a pack of Tunnock’s tea cakes which – regardless of Brexit – remain as delicious and substantial as always.”
A Labour source said: “This took us by surprise – the SNP’s whole mission is greater separation.”
The estimated cost of a motion ranges from £5-6, a spokesman said.
Mr Beattie said: “I like Toblerone, and I like it how it is traditional, with its nice, tight triangular pieces. Now they have changed it. Clearly it is a matter of international importance that it has happened and it is obviously a byproduct of Brexit.”
