Wright keen to eradicate errors to improve form in Perth

Boss identifies avoiding mistakes as answer to home struggles

Tommy Wright doesn’t think there’s any great mystery to the difference between St Johnstone’s home and away form.

And the Perth boss believes cutting out McDiarmid Park mistakes will sort the issue.

“We need to improve our home record because we have been dropping points and it has been a problem,” Wright said.

“Away from home we’ve been incredible and we prepare the same way, so it’s a strange one.

“Perhaps teams sit in more when they come here but, more than that, I think it has been down to making mistakes.

“Individual errors have cost us in a few of the home games. I wouldn’t say we’ve been outplayed by anyone.

“But we just need to iron out the wee things that have led to the opposition scoring. It’s something we know we have to rectify.”

Wright’s theory will be put to the test when bottom of the league Ross County visit Perth on Saturday.

The Northern Irishman won’t be lulled into thinking Jim McIntyre’s men will be a soft touch, however.

He pointed out: “I watched Ross County’s games against Celtic and Rangers and felt on both occasions they were impressive.

“Jim has a strong squad there and maybe they’ve been affected by winning the League Cup.

“You find that with teams who win that – Aberdeen didn’t finish the season as strongly as they had when they won it, while Kilmarnock and St Mirren have also struggled.

“It’s a strange one but they’re a good side.

“They lost Jackson Irvine in the summer and that was obviously a blow for them because he was a very important player.

“But Jim reinvested and when you have to bring in new players it takes time for people to settle.”

Wight added: “There’s no way they’ll be panicking. Jim knows what he’s got in his squad and he’ll know they won’t be down there for long.

“In this league it turns very quickly. You have a lot of games coming thick and fast over the next couple of months so there’s plenty chances to pick up points.

“I don’t think Ross County’s league position matches up with the way they play and the quality they’ve got in their squad.”

Keith Watson continued his return from injury for the under-20s on Tuesday night.
