Perthshire chamber to host seminar on business rates

-

Concerns over the revaluation of business rates will come under focus at a seminar organised by Perthshire Chamber of Commerce.

April 1 heralds the start of the rating revaluation for nondomestic properties throughout Scotland and the chamber and Graham and Sibbald have teamed up to provide advice at the event, which will take place at the Royal George Hotel, Perth, on Thursday at 5.30pm.

Vicki Unite, chief executive of the chamber of commerce, said: “Scottish businesses are already facing a number of challenges, from the weak economy and pressure on inflation to the uncertainty caused by Brexit.

“On top of these worries, there is real concern about the impact of the business rates revaluation, with the final levels due to be confirmed in March.

“Even with support measures announced by the Scottish Government this week, they don’t address the underlying problems and many businesses face an uncertain outlook.

“We are committed to listening to the concerns of businesses and ensuring their voice is heard by government.”

Ms Unite added: “With provisional notices having recently been issued by the assessors, it’s now evident some sectors could be particularly hard hit, with increases in rateable value of 100% and more being reported in some instances.

“The converse is, however, the case in some sectors where reductions in rateable values have also been seen, which combined with the small business bonus scheme means some smaller businesses will benefit.”
