100 years ago

The meat and allied trades of Dundee are to co-operate in the scheme for raising funds for the Scottish Red Cross Society. A large meeting of the above trades was held in Mathers’ Hotel, when the scheme had an enthusiast­ic sendoff. Mr William Allan, President of the Dundee and District Master Butchers’ Associatio­n occupied the chair and read a letter from Sir James Murray, Aberdeen, in which he stated that his offer of subscribin­g 10% on all the money collected held good in Dundee.

50 years ago

Two eight-year-old boys were given a job which made them the envy of every schoolboy in Scotland. Alex Hastings and William Clason, of Zetland School, Grangemout­h, were invited along to Grangemout­h Docks to taste a huge export order of liquorice allsorts before it was loaded aboard the SS Monarda. Alex and William, who were chosen by their headmaster, were taken to a shed at the dockside where the order of 114 tons of allsorts was stored and given two bags of 30lbs to share with pupils.

A Dundee man whose guide dog tragically died late last year has been found a replacemen­t in record time. Wallace Briscoe was lost when his faithful companion Brodie died in November. Because of a disability in his left hand, Wallace required a specially trained dog to walk on his right. Guide dogs are normally trained to walk to the left. The Guide Dogs for the Blind Associatio­n quickly identified a successor for Brodie and Wallace has been on an intensive training course with new dog Roy.

One year ago

A heartbroke­n pensioner died hours after watching a recording of his wife’s funeral from his hospital bed. Bill Cameron, 81, was desperate to attend the funeral of Rena, his wife of almost 59 years, but was struck down with pneumonia. The retired glazier had been left devastated after the love of his life passed away at their Monifieth home on February 18. Unable to attend Rena’s funeral, Bill was reduced to tears as he watched the service on his daughter’s mobile phone. He died the following morning.
