The momentum finally gave way at the crucial moment and, following a good rally at match point, Watson failed to clear the net to settle matters in Konta’s favour.

“It was definitely a brilliant experience for both of us as Fed Cup team-mates and I am very happy to have come through it,” said Konta, who was playing her first match in a month after a foot injury.

Konta had been forced to sit out of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after a strong start to the season, winning her second career title at the Apia International Sydney and reaching a second straight Australian Open quarter-final.

“When the wind picks up, that can also complicate things. But it’s a beautiful center court to play on, so I hope to extend my stay here as long as possible.”

Konta awaits the winner of the match between 21st seed Caroline Garcia and Evgeniya Rodina.
