100 years ago

The Rev. Stewart Crabb, in St John’s UF Church, Cupar, yesterday, said the drink trade was doing the work of the Kaiser and the German army. Their young men were being ruined at the front with the rum ration. They were speeding £9,000,000 on drink in this country and betraying the army with it. It came, he said, with very bad grace from the licensed trade to squeal about losing their living while their trade was not only depriving people of their living but also of their lives.

50 years ago

A new industry has started in Anstruther in what was formerly a golf cleek factory. The venture has been launched by Fleming (Scottish Scampi) Ltd, for the deep-freeze processing of fish. The man behind it is Mr John Fleming, of Anstruther whose business interests include farming at Kilrenny Mill, haulage contractin­g and fish setting. The staff at present comprises six women and two men under James Darnell who has come from North Shields to provide the necessary skill.

A fashion show at Harris Academy, Dundee is certain to raise well over £1,000 for research into cot death syndrome. Support for the show from pupils, their relatives, school staff and local businesses has been overwhelmi­ng and about 600 people turned out for the event. Four sixth year girls – Claire Anderson, Jill Morrison, Kirsty Mudie and Laura Shepherd – were the driving force behind the fund-raiser. A comprehens­ive wardrobe was modelled by senior pupils, their siblings and members of staff.

Dundee has a comic heritage like no other city, but now Dundee University is working to ensure that it also shapes the future of the creative industry. Graphic novels and comics are now worth billions globally each year. Artist Cam Kennedy started out on DC Thomson’s Commando comic but has gone on to earn worldwide acclaim as an artist with Marvel and DC Comics in the US. He returned to Scotland to help launch a new post-graduate programme for aspiring comic artists, writers and scholars.
