100 years ago

There was a large attendance at yesterday’s meeting of the Dundee Women’s Fund Committee held in the Town House, Miss Kynoch presiding. It was intimated that the number of comforts received at the Central Depot during the past week was 1,019, bringing the grand total up to 173,555. Only one appeal for comforts had to be dealt with. It came from Miss Stokes, matron, British Farmers’ Hospital, Belgium. After discussion it was agreed to send 100 pairs of socks and 40 shirts.

50 years ago

Sir Francis Chichester yesterday radioed that he was sailing around Cape Horn, the Chilean Navy reported from Punta Arenas, Chile. No other informatio­n was available. A blanket of fog was reported in the Cape area as his silver and white ketch, Gipsy Moth IV, ploughed through the Antarctic seas at the most dangerous point of his 28,500-mile voyage around the world. Calculatio­ns by the naval station put his position at some 90 miles west of the Cape off the Hardy Peninsula.

A Kirkcaldy shopkeeper is “comfortabl­e” in hospital following a terrifying knife attack. Akhtar Hussain was injured when two men attacked him in his shop in St Kilda Crescent, Templehall and stole a three-figure sum of money. Mr Hussain was treated on the premises by paramedics before being taken to Victoria Hospital where he received treatment for cuts to his head and arms. Assistant Paul Dickson (18) said he left the shop at 8.30pm and the attackers must have moved quickly.

Plans for Perth to have a river taxi scheme are nearer fruition with the announceme­nt that the council has secured more funding. Work will begin on installing pontoons this summer. The council was awarded money from the Coastal Communitie­s Fund and has now been granted a further £100,000 for phase two of the project. This will be used to develop storage facilities. It is proposed to install pontoons on river banks, including one near the Fergusson Gallery and another at Willowgate.
