Business against independence
Sir, - As we stutter and stumble towards another divisive referendum imposed on the Scottish people by the SNP and the Greens (which the majority of the Scots do not want) we should be reminded of the last referendum when few businesses (large and small) put their heads above the parapet and expressed their views about how independence would affect their businesses.
The reason for the silence was because of threats of boycotts, potential loss of government contracts and subsidies (perceived or otherwise) intimidation or concerns about planning and so on.
However, the stakes are much higher this time as the economic situation in Scotland is in a far worse position than in 2014 and consequently the impact on businesses would be much greater.
Fortunately, the signs are encouraging as a survey in the SME sector by a reputable chartered accountant had to be terminated within 24 hours due to an overwhelming 800 responses.
The SMEs had a very clear message for the SNP in that a massive 89% stated they don’t want another referendum and an equally impressive 86% rejected independence.
Soon it will be the responsibility of large businesses in Scotland to step up to the plate and to inform the Scottish people as to what their position would be with regard to a further referendum and independence.
In doing so, Scottish firms need to spell out how their future investments plans would be affected and whether they would intend to remain in Scotland.
Although the SNP and Greens would ignore any survey, the silent majority would listen very carefully. Ian Lakin. Pinelands, Murtle Den Road, Milltimber.
