It was the birthplace of the Queen Mother and Glamis Castle is the perfect venue for a fun day out.

For the best of springtime, Glamis Castle has so much to offer. This fairytale castle, ancestral home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne since 1372 and still in private ownership, will open its doors to visitors once again from Saturday April 1.

The mile-long drive, lined with thousands of daffodils and ending at the red sandstone castle with its backdrop of snow-capped mountains, will take your breath away.

Glamis is a castle of great elegance, full of history and yet still retaining a sense of family occupation. You feel as if you could kick off your shoes and spend an afternoon relaxing, even in the most splendid rooms.

Any visit to Glamis is a treat and their guided tours are world renowned. An hour-long guided tour offers the visitor a snapshot of one family’s contributi­on to Scottish history, not the least that Glamis was the childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

From the grand State Rooms to the intimate feel of the Royal Apartments, you will enjoy fine furniture, paintings, scary ghost stories and tales of derringdo.

After your tour, wander the beautiful gardens and grounds, where spring will be in full flower. Stop for a cup of tea in the Victorian Kitchen restaurant or browse the beautifull­y-stocked shop.

The season’s events are well under way and there will be something for everyone throughout the 2017 season.

For the Easter weekend the Castle offers offer an Easter Egg hunt, a way for children to work off some energy but still keep their brains working well.

The prize is a Cream Egg but hang on to the answer sheet as you will also have the chance to enter the grand draw to win a giant Easter bunny.

Glamis Horrible Histories offers children old and young a chance to hear true stories about Glamis that you might not ordinarily hear.

What is worm soup anyway? Horrible histories will give you the answer.

There will also be the chance for kids to go wild in the woods, walk the log, measure a monster tree and other activities.

During the rest of the school holidays children and their parents can enjoy other self lead activities like den building, pooh sticks and our children’s quiz trail in the grounds.

Finishing off April is the first family play of the season, Oscar Wilde’s The Cantervill­e Ghost as performed by the Birmingham-based company Don’t Go Into the Cellar.

You will be able to enjoy comedy and chills in this original adaptation of the charming Oscar Wilde tale, written especially for children and young families. This one man show features plenty of audience participat­ion.
