Moves to solve sewage problems downstream from Perth

-

Sewage has been leaking into the River Tay downstream of Perth.

Concerned residents had reported the murky discharge but have been assured that efforts are in hand to rectify the problem.

The billowing discharge, which was discolouring the Tay and turning it brown, was captured by local people on video and posted on social media.

They also questioned the wisdom of leisure use of the area while the problem was still to be resolved.

“Not sure if water sports in the brown Tay is a good idea,” posted one man.

A spokesperson from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) moved to reassure the public that the problem is in the process of being resolved.

“Sepa has been made aware of a mechanical failure at Scottish Water’s Friarton Pumping Station which has resulted in it being unable to pump all of the flow to Perth sewage works under certain flow conditions,” said the spokesperson.

“Sepa has raised the issue with Scottish Water and has been assured they are carrying out repairs. Sepa officers are monitoring the site and vising it on a regular basis.”

A Scottish Water spokesperson added: “We are experiencing technical issues with Friarton Pumping Station in Perth.

“We have contractors on-site who are assisting with managing the issues at the pumping station. We are awaiting delivery of parts that will enable the pumping station to return to normal service.

“In the meantime, we have a temporary apparatus in place to redirect flows from the station to another facility.”
