Grove men can clinch third

-

Grove Menzieshill are almost sure of third place in the league part of Division 1 and they can guarantee that this weekend by defeating Gordonians in Aberdeen tomorrow to achieve this.

Sunday’s match against a much improved Uddingston will be more testing but fourth will be the best they can do. That is not guaranteed as Western Wildcats and possibly Watsonians will have designs on fourth place and the post league play-offs, giving vital importance to the clash of Western Wildcats and Uddingston.

Last Sunday’s win by Uddingston over then leaders Kelburne is a clear indication of their current form. It also gave Grange the opportunity to move above Kelburne to top the table which they duly did in a late game on Sunday with a narrow 2-1 win over Edinburgh University.

Dundee Wanderers and Inverleith are all but confirmed as the top two in Division 2 and both must be expected to win their two games this weekend, and all by a significant margin. Wins by Wanderers over Greenock and Inverleith over Dundee University will also help clarify the relegation position for both these opponents.

Harris, seven points clear of Greenock, will clearly be interested in these results but would be advised to concentrate on their own game against Dundee University, possibly their last chance to pick up points as their last two games are against St Andrews Uni and Inverleith.

The form of the university has slipped of late but they are still in with a slight chance of claiming third place.

With only one promotion place up for grabs in Division 3 it is vital that Perthshire make home advantage count against Aberdeen Grammar to maintain their threepoint lead over Erskine Stewart’s Melville and Strathclyde University. These two would do Perthshire a great favour if they draw tomorrow, handing the title to the Perth club if they win.

Monarchs have slipped into the bottom four but have the chance to put distance between them and the other three as they face them all in their last three games. So the ball is very much in Monarchs’ court when the meet CALA Edinburgh, with only one draw to their credit.

Menzieshill II will be within an ace of clinching the Central 2 title with a win over Hillhead III, a distant fifth in the table. It is as well that they do that now as they have two tricky games following this against second placed Inverleith II and third placed Edinburgh University III.
