Outdoor living to welcome the summer sun

Here comes the warmer weather – so let’s get the garden ready for some sunshine, barbecues and relaxation

-

It’s time to scrub those decks, powerhose the patio and hope for some sunshine so we can all get into the garden for a much needed dose of fresh air.

Creating an outside space you truly love will mean having somewhere to relax and unwind after all the hard work is done. And if the weather is kind your garden can amount to an extra room in your home.

If you regularly dine outdoors, whether you are a barbecue fan or simply like to decant from the dining room to the decking, outdoor furniture that can take exposure to the Scottish elements is a must.

Invest in a sturdy set with removable cushions for an easy decamp when those inevitable spring showers appear.

Blue hues and stripes lend a nauticual feel to outdoor spaces, while richer colours bring more exotic climes to mind.

Make sure you buy a table big enough for everyone to sit at comfortably while they enjoy their al fresco dining.

A cute bistro-style table and a chair or two placed on a sunny balcony or courtyard can be just as inviting, whether you want somewhere to chill with a cuppa or have a romantic open-air meal.

For smaller spaces, add a few pretty pot plants and cushions or blankets for a cosier feel when the sun goes down.

This look works perfectly with a shabby chic or boho vibe, with lots of wild flowers and ditsy patterns.

If you are one of those outdoor types who is determined to stay out when the warm air has disappeared, a heater is a must. Opt for a rustic feel with a chiminea in a sheltered spot or think about a stylish fire pit for a showstopping finish to any barbecue or al fresco party.

If you throw regular outdoor parties, it can be a good idea to invest in some plastic glasses and tablewear. Look out for bright patterns and cute colours in your local garden centre or supermarket.

Get creative, make a wonderful outside space for entertaining or chilling – and pray for the sun to shine on your efforts.
