Master chefs extol virtues of a balanced diet

-

Pupils at Newport Primary School have been treated to a visit from two celebrity chefs who are on a mission to inspire young people to enjoy a healthy balanced diet.

Gary Maclean, the current BBC MasterChef professional title holder, and Jamie Scott, the 2014 winner, described their television experiences and told more than 200 pupils about the importance of learning to cook.

The men were appearing as advocates for Scotch beef through their links with meat promotional body Quality Meat Scotland.

Head teacher Jill Crichton described Gary and Jamie as inspirational role models.

“Many of the older children have followed Gary and Jamie through their MasterChef journeys so to have them here, answering questions about how they became chefs, how they cook at home and, of course, their experiences on MasterChef: The Professionals, was just fantastic.”

Gary said he had been inspired by Jamie’s success.

He added: “I was also really impressed with the questions the children asked and their genuine interest in learning more about healthy food and careers in the food industry.”

Jamie, who owns the Newport Restaurant, just a short distance from the school, said it was important that children had a good understanding of where food comes from and how to cook tasty, nutritious meals.
