Perthshire villages urged to make bid for television stardom

-

The charms of small communities across Perth and Kinross could land a £10,000 prize.

Channel 4 is making a programme presented by Penelope Keith that aims to uncover the country’s best village and a team of judges will be travelling the length and breadth of the UK to determine the winner this summer.

This competition is not just for picturesque villages but also for those that have a great sense of community and connection with local history and heritage.

Local politicians are encouraging community representatives to consider nominating their home villages in the belief that somewhere in this area could win the contest.

“With so many picturesque villages in Perthshire this is an ideal opportunity for community groups to highlight what is great about their local area,” said Perthshire North MP Pete Wishart.

MSP John Swinney said: “Perthshire North is home to some fabulous small communities with their own, unique identities.

“This new contest is an excellent opportunity for villages to showcase what their area has to offer to a national audience.”

Conservative MSP Liz Smith backed their call saying the area was “bursting full of small communities and villages that tick every box on the judges’ scorecard”.

“With the recent success of the Great British Bake Off, the Great British Sewing Bee and the Big Painting Challenge, this new show could become a prime time favourite and offer the opportunity to showcase your village to the whole country on national television,” she said.

“Ultimately it is the warmth of the people who make our small villages and communities incredible places to live, and across the region there will be no shortage of possible candidates for the title of Britain’s Best Village, and I would like to wish those entering the best of luck.”

The closing date for applications is May 14 and to apply visit voty@reeftv.com or www.villageoftheyear.co.uk.
