Crannog’s Easter Eggstravaganza
The Iron Age team at the Scottish Crannog Centre by Kenmore have revealed their Easter Sunday programme.
Re-enactors will be making pancakes with spelt wheat cooked over an open fire, churning butter, making buns to bake in clay ovens, and painting hard-boiled eggs with earth paints including yellow and red ochres.
In addition, the Crannog crew have prepared a special I Spy quiz for families – every youngster who completes the quiz will get a sweet surprise.
Tomorrow kickstarts the centre’s 20th anniversary event programme, neatly coinciding with Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology.
Each of their 2017 events is inspired by at least one Artefact of the Month discovered in underwater excavations of a 2,500-year-old loch dwelling in Loch Tay.
April celebrates the finds of an ancient wooden butter dish that still contained butter-fat residue and spelt wheat grains.
Prior to this discovery it was thought that the Romans introduced spelt wheat to Scotland but the discovery established it had been around for 500 years before their arrival.
The Crannog Eggstravaganza runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm tomorrow, but the centre remains open until 5.30pm.
Booking is not required and there are no tour times as the event operates on a free-toroam basis with tickets valid all day. For further details, visit www.crannog.co.uk.
