McCabe says three points would provide safety net

Rhys McCabe insists Dunfermline will soon get back on the goal trail as the Pars attempt to end their first campaign back in the Championship with a flourish.

The Fifers appear unlikely to be drawn into a relegation scrap after recovering from a woeful start to cement their place in the second tier.

However, while Allan Johnston’s men have enjoyed a respectable 2017, goals from open play have been at a premium of late.

Nevertheless, McCabe is adamant Dunfermline’s woes in front of goal will soon abate if they keep creating the same amount of inviting opportunities.

The former Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder said: “Our stats say one goal from open play in six games. That’s true, and it is frustrating because it is not like we are on the back foot and defending for 90 minutes.

“We are more than in the games that we have played.

“It is just luck, or maybe the breaks falling to the defenders, and it is not quite happening in front of goal.

“The only way we can go about it is to keep getting yourself into the right areas. We can handle it if we miss the chances, as long as we are creating things.

“Hopefully one of them falls right, but when we get the chance we have to be more clinical and take them.”

McCabe reckons the East End Park outfit cannot consider themselves out of trouble just yet.

He added: “It is a massive game at a pivotal point of the season. It is important that we don’t take our foot off the gas because very few points separate the bottom of the league to the play-off places.

“For me, it is probably the most important of the season.

“We need to get the three points and that would give us a safety net. We could build from that.”
