Whistle from SS Forfarshire to go under the hammer
A brass steam whistle recovered from the wreck of the Dundee-built SS Forfarshire, whose survivors were saved by Grace Darling in 1838, is to go under the hammer with a valuation of £4,000. A total of 43 passengers and crew perished in the tragedy at the Farne Islands on September 7 1838. The 12-inch brass whistle, which was recovered by divers in 1948, will be put up for sale at maritime specialist auctioneers Charles Miller Ltd in London on Tuesday.
