Highland Perthshire zero waste challenge continues its efforts

-

A zero waste challenge will be launched in Pitlochry, Ballinluig and Blair Atholl this weekend in an effort to increase recycling.

It will measure any reduction in the amount of waste being disposed of and the increase in household recycling since the Zero Waste Highland Perthshire campaign launched in May 2016.

The money saved through reduced disposal and increased recycling will be awarded back to the community, which will be asked to have its say in who is awarded the money.

Householders in neighbouring Aberfeldy, Kinloch Rannoch, Kenmore, Grandtully and Glenlyon reduced general waste by 25% and increased their recycling by 17%, saving £973.66 in disposal costs.

Those funds were awarded back to the newly-established Men’s Shed in Aberfeldy.

During the challenge, a series of events will be held to give advice on ways to reduce waste and reuse and recycle more.

They kick off on Saturday with a free zero waste lunch in Pitlochry Scout Hall, starting at noon.

A documentary, The True Cost, will be shown at the Atholl Centre in Pitlochry on Saturday May 6, from 1pm, followed by a clothing swap-shop.

On Sunday May 14 there will be a home composting workshop run by experts at the Biodynamic Garden in Camserney, just outside Aberfeldy.

Zero Waste Highland Perthshire will also have stalls at the PUGs Gala Day on Saturday May 13 and Pitlochry Market on Saturday May 20

Suggestions for cash awards should be sent to zerowaste community@pkc.gov.uk before May 25.
