Woman supplied drugs in prison

-

A woman who tried to smuggle drugs into Perth Prison protested “it’s just hash” when caught.

Samantha Stewart tried to hand over a wrap of cannabis while visiting a prisoner.

She was caught after CCTV operators saw her acting suspiciously.

Depute fiscal Bill Kermode said: “CCTV operators observed the accused enter the visiting room and attend at the vending machine before sitting at a table.

“She was observed passing an item to the prisoner, which was caught on CCTV and staff were made aware.

“They recovered a wrap containing brown powder from the prisoner.

“Constables attended. She was spoken to and replied ‘it’s just hash’.

“The item was field tested and was found to be cannabis weighing 1.3g and with a value of £10.30, however that value is three times greater in prison.”

Stewart’s solicitor said she had suffered difficulties in her life, adding: “She accepts responsibility for this.

“She is a vulnerable young woman.”

Stewart, of Dudhope Court, Dundee, admitted supplying cannabis within Perth Prison on April 27 last year.

Sheriff William Wood warned the 29-year-old her future was “bleak” if she continued to offend.

He sentenced her to a 12week curfew between the hours of 7pm and 7am.
