A doctor who shared alcoholic drinks with a teenager during an overnight trip to see comedian Frankie Boyle was left injured after an incident in her hotel room.

Police were called to psychologist Dr Gina Fearn’s hotel after reports of a disturbance involving her and the boy who was in her care.

Fearn, 33, originally from Perth, had booked a two-night stay in the Marriott Hotel in Preston, Lancashire, and travelled from Scotland with the 17-year-old in March last year.

She had tickets to see Scots comic Boyle and later shared drinks with the boy, whom she met while working at St Mary’s Kenmure centre in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow.

St Mary’s provide secure residential care and education for children aged 11 to 18 who have significant social, emotional and behavioural needs.

Alarmed hotel staff called the authorities after a “disturbance” and investigating officers found Fearn had injuries to her nose, and reported smelling alcohol on her breath.

The boy, known as service user A, was arrested and spent the night in police cells.

Fearn is appearing before the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service (HCPTS) where she admitted she took the boy on the trip on or around March 31 last year and provided alcohol.

Fearn was suspended and later left her post.

Charlotte Watt, for the HCPTS, told the hearing in Glasgow: “The police were required to attend the hotel in relation to an incident involving Dr Fearn and service user A.

“The hotel staff had reported a disturbance between a male and female in a room.

“PC Dan Buchanan attended and service user A was being destructive and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

“He was arrested and taken to a police station and stayed there overnight.

“Dr Fearn was seen to have sustained an injury to her nose and PC Buchanan could smell alcohol on her breath.”

The hearing was told Fearn began working at St Mary’s Kenmure as a psychologist in 2014. She met the boy when he was admitted to the unit on two occasions.

After he left the unit aged 16 in March 2015 she took on a role as his pathway supporter.

Miss Watt added: “Professional boundaries should have been established such as not drinking alcohol together and not sharing a hotel room.

“Dr Fearn’s action on this night fell below the standards required.”

The hearing continues.
