Firefighters had to use cutting gear to free a woman from a car involved in a head-on collision in Perth at the weekend.

The two-vehicle accident happened shortly before 12.50pm on Saturday on Crieff Road, near to the entrance to Perth College UHI.

The road was immediately closed off to allow emergency services to deal with the incident and police appealed for motorists to avoid the area. It was closed between the junction with Tulloch Road and the Tulloch Institute and diversions were put in place.

With the normally busy road shut, there was some traffic disruption caused in both directions away from the scene.

Two local fire service units attended and cutting equipment was used to extricate the victim from one of the vehicles.

Police officers and an ambulance crew also attended at the scene and one woman – understood to be the driver of one of the cars – was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee by ambulance for treatment.

The police said the injuries she sustained were not life-threatening.

The road remained closed for nearly three hours while the vehicles were removed and debris cleared away.

Police investigators examined the crash scene while the road was closed.

Local people spoke of hearing a loud bang “like a gunshot” that alerted them to the accident. They rushed to scene and alerted the emergency services.

The vehicles involved were extensively damaged by the impact.
