Wighton plays starring role in historic victory for young Scots

-

Dundee’s Craig Wighton was part of a piece of Scottish football history at the weekend.

The forward, who has starred in the dark blue of his club, did so in the dark blue of his country, helping the national side’s under-20s defeat Brazil 1-0 in the prestigious Toulon tournament.

It was Scotland’s first victory over the mighty Brazil at any level.

There have been 10 fixtures between the countries down the years – including four at World Cups for the senior side. Scotland’s women have also tried and failed to get a victory.

Scott Gemmill’s boys, who lost to the Czech Republic on Wednesday, now have Indonesia to face tomorrow in their bid to make the semi-finals.

Kilmarnock full-back Greg Taylor was the hero, with his strike on the stroke of half-time the only goal of the game.

He latched on to an Oliver Burke pass before smashing the ball beyond Phelipe in the Brazilian goal as the young Scots recorded a memorable victory, taking them to second in their group.

Burke again captained the side and his great run down the right almost led to the opening goal after 22 minutes.

The RB Leipzig forward latched on to Ruben Sammut’s pass and he found Wighton in space inside the box but the Dundee striker sent his effort wide.

Burke then had the chance to open the scoring himself four minutes later when he burst free of the Brazil defence but his low shot was saved by Phelipe.

Brazil controlled possession for periods of the second half but Scotland held firm to create history and give their Toulon bid a shot in the arm ahead of tomorrow’s match against Indonesia.

The win was just what Scotland deserved given their unexpected dominance in the game.
