McCann insists he has ‘quality’ squad at Dens

New boss promises he won’t oversee radical surgery

New Dundee boss Neil McCann insists he will not be overseeing radical surgery to the squad at Dens this summer.

The 42-year-old was officially unveiled as the new permanent manager of the Dark Blues on Friday.

He had, of course, previously had a five game spell as interim boss at the end of last season after the club dispensed with the services of Paul Hartley.

McCann steered Dundee to Premiership safety and he insists he still has nothing but praise for the players who helped turn things around.

The Dark Blues have relatively few players such as Kosta Gadzhalov, Kevin Gomis and Nick Ross coming out of contract while others like Nicky Low, who is out on loan at Derry City, are waiting to find what the future holds under McCann.

However, one thing the manager is sure about is that there is quality in the squad at Dens.

He said: “There are players under contract. I’m not going to start hammering the squad when I was supportive of them when I took the job.

“Those guys were on their backs after seven defeats in a row and they managed to get safe within the first three matches when I arrived. That shows there’s quality in there.

“There are guys out of contract who may look to go elsewhere. There are maybe guys under contract who might not be happy but until I have discussions and see what funds are available I don’t know.

“I’m looking to add to the squad I have and if I can get my own players in with that mix I’m pretty confident.”
