Berra admits England were ‘more clinical’ at Wembley

Defender Christophe Berra has promised that Scotland will use their heads to stop England scoring when they face them again.

The Scots lost three goals to headers when they last faced the Auld Enemy at Wembley on November 11.

Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill all nodded home with relative ease in that World Cup Group F qualifier and Berra admits there is room for improvement when the sides meet again at Hampden on Saturday.

The new Hearts skipper said: “I think the game at Wembley just came down to taking chances – they took theirs and we didn’t take ours.

“They were more clinical and that’s football for you. That is why – no disrespect to our squad – their players are playing for teams like Chelsea and Liverpool – the top, top teams in England.

“You make a mistake, one slight switch-off for a second, and these guys can punish you,” added the central defender.

“So we are looking to put that right. One goal from Lallana was a cutback from 10 yards or so, one (Cahill’s third) was from a corner and the other was fired into Surridge, who glanced it in.

“A couple of them were avoidable, while maybe one of them was credit to them. I am sure the gaffer will have us working on it to put it right.

“All goals are avoidable. That’s the sport. If it was boring and everyone was perfect, every game would finish 0-0 and you (the media) would have nothing to write about!”
