Man hit by late-night curfew after drunken bar attack

-

A Perth man who repeatedly punched a stranger around the head in a city bar while in a drunken haze has been banned from venturing out at night for 14 weeks.

Ryan Buchanan will be tagged and prevented from leaving his home between 8pm and 6.30am in the wake of his offence.

At Perth Sheriff Court he could give little explanation for his attack, which saw him repeatedly strike his victim in the head.

Buchanan approached the man while he was engaged in a conversation within The Venue in St Johns Street and struck him on the side of the face.

He then punched him a further four or five times.

Buchanan, of Dupplin Road, admitted carrying out the assault on August 13 last year.

Solicitor Linda Clark said: “Mr Buchanan was on a day out with work mates and a significant amount of alcohol had been consumed.

“He believes there may have been an altercation between the complainer and a member of his group earlier in the evening but accepts this gave him little excuse to carry out this assault.”

Sheriff William Wood told the accused his liberty was in severe jeopardy.

“Details appear to be sketchy but what is clear is that you had taken too much alcohol and were out of control.

“Clearly when you have had too much to drink you resort to violence.

“If this continues then you will end up back in prison.

“For the moment, you will be tagged so that you cannot simply go out.”

In addition to restricting his liberty, the sheriff ordered Buchanan to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.
