Home hope Wiesberger aiming to bring A game

-

Home favourite Bernd Wiesberger admits he has one eye on next week’s US Open, but would love to travel to Erin Hills on the back of a second victory in the Lyoness Open.

Wiesberger triumphed at Diamond Country Club in 2012 and is a firm favourite to claim a second European Tour title of the season following his play-off win over Tommy Fleetwood in the Shenzhen International in April.

The vagaries of the world rankings mean that 2015 winner Chris Wood has withdrawn from the event to improve his chances of remaining 60th in the world and therefore qualifying for the US Open.

And that leaves Wiesberger and Joost Luiten as the only players in the world’s top 100 in the field, with defending champion Wu Ashun having dropped to 272nd after seven missed cuts in 11 events this season.

“It’s a big thing for me and Austrian golf,” world No 29 Wiesberger said of the 1 million euro event. “I think every Austrian is looking forward to it and preparing the way to perform their best this week, and it is the same for me. I am hoping to bring my A game.”

Scots in the field this week are Marc Warren, Stephen Gallacher, Duncan Stewart, Scott Henry and Craig Lee.

Rickie Fowler is the only member of the world’s top 10 competing at the PGA Tour’s FedEx St Jude Classic in Memphis ahead of the second major championship of the year, next week’s US Open.
