Spotlight on Lunan Bay

- With Caroline Lindsay

One of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland, Lunan Bay between Arbroath and Montrose has attracted thousands of visitors through the ages from Viking armies in the 10th Century to generations of holidaymakers.

Our first photograph was taken in October 1996 and shows army engineers from Faslane carrying out a controlled explosion after 46 Second World War shells were found there the preceding weekend.

The old railway station in Lunan Bay was turned into a dream home for a couple called Mr and Mrs Wickham, complete with thriving market garden, as this picture taken in 1975 shows.

Our final image goes all the way back to 1932 and shows visitors to the famous beauty spot heading to the beach. Although it’s July, everyone seems to be well wrapped up against the stiff sea breeze. The barricade in the foreground was erected to keep motorists out.
