100 years ago

One of the most highly-esteemed citizens of Kirkcaldy has passed away in the person of Mr William Millie Dow, solicitor and agent of the British Linen Company’s Bank. Mr Dow, who was in his 79th year, died in a nursing home in Glasgow. He was the oldest practising lawyer in Kirkcaldy. He was Town Clerk of Kinghorn, a position he held for the long period of 41 years. His predecesso­r, Thomas Barclay, was Town Clerk for 60 years, so that Kinghorn has only had two Town Clerks during the last 100 years.

50 years ago

Plans for the swimming pool at Carnoustie Secondary School, which is to be completed in 1970, were announced at Angus Education Committee. The pool will be 82ft 6in long and 28ft wide, and will be from 9ft 10in to 3ft deep. The authority is to meet the cost applicable to a normal 66ft long pool with the Town Council meeting the balance of the cost of the larger pool. The pool will be controlled by the County Council as education authority who will meet the cost of staff.

A Tayport teenager has just returned from a two week voyage on the Malcolm Miller training ship. Luckily 17-year-old Angela Thomson, of Scott Crescent, isn’t afraid of heights, as she spent part of each day on board 80 feet above the sea on the spars. “I wasn’t scared at all,” she said. “When I was up in the crow’s nest I took photograph­s looking down on the ship. I really enjoyed it.” The voyage began at Oban and went up the west coast, round Cape Wrath and down the east coast to Leith.

Pupils and teachers are celebratin­g a constructi­on milestone at a multimilli­on-pound new school. The first bricks were laid at Alyth Primary to mark the next stage of its transforma­tion. An £8.9 million extension is being built on the side of the Victorian-era schoolhous­e. It is part of a massive investment programme in new build schools and upgrades, which is likely to be extended after Perth and Kinross Council budget talks. Council boss Ian Miller laid the first brick of the building.
