A 12-year-old girl remains in a critical condition in hospital following a serious road accident in Kennoway last week.

The youngster was taken to the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh after an accident with a silver Ford Mondeo on the town’s Sandy Brae on Thursday evening.

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to the incident, which occurred at around 7.15pm and left the girl with head, chest and leg injuries.

Sergeant Alastair Purvis said: “This collision has resulted in a young girl being taken to hospital with serious injuries and I’m urging anyone who was in the Sandy Brae area and has information that may be able to help our investigation to come forward.

“Likewise anyone who saw the vehicle or witnessed the collision is asked to contact police.”

Used by thousands of motorists every day, Sandy Brae runs through the heart of Kennoway and is a major route for those travelling between Cupar and central Fife.

The road was closed for around five hours in the aftermath of the collision, with a number of local residents said to have come to the aid of the injured youngster.

Ambulances crews initially transferred the casualty to Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital by ambulance, before the decision was taken to transfer her for specialist treatment in Edinburgh.

Residents of Sandy Brae have since spoken of their concerns about the volume of traffic on the route, with one householder stating that an accident such as Thursday’s was “inevitable”.

Frances Murray, who recently bought a property just yards from the crash site, added: “When I’ve been reversing on to the road the cars have come flying down the road. “It can be very dangerous.” Anybody with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
