Sheer nerves fail to halt Ed’s set

Star says headline set is very different to when he played to ‘about 500 people’

Ed Sheeran admitted he was battling nerves as he stepped out to headline the last night of this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

The chart-topping star opened his set on the Pyramid Stage with a rousing rendition of his hit Castle On The Hill, before pausing to speak to the huge crowd.

“Glastonbury, how are you doing?” he said. “I have to admit, I’m very nervous but I’m very excited, very excited.”

The singer said this year’s set was very different to his first Glastonbury experience in 2011, when he performed to “about 500 people”.

Sheeran then launched into a string of his hits, including Eraser, Bloodstream and The A-Team.

Earlier, Nile Rodgers of Chic said his stay in the UK had been the “most inspirational period” of his life as he took to the stage, praising the way the UK had responded to the Grenfell tower fire.

The US star, 64, told the crowd he was among the volunteers after the blaze and had been moved by the “unreal” spirit of the helpers. He said a woman told him when he turned up: “Nile Rodgers, I’m happy you are here, here’s a pair of gloves, get to work.

“I have been here in London, in England, for about 10 days and I’ve got to be honest with you, it has been the most inspirational period of my life.

“Instead of what I was seeing on the television when I was flying over, seeing a bunch of people being angry and stuff, I saw a bunch of people who were full of love.”
