The votes are in and the people have spoken, a shade of green (or is it blue?) inspired by the silvery Tay has been chosen as the world’s favourite colour.

Dundee University graduate Annie Marrs, who chose the teal hue subsequently named after her, said she became inspired to pick her colour after a river boat trip.

Marrs green was voted for thousands of times onwww. worlds favourite colour. comas part of a major global survey spanning hundreds of countries.

The announcement was made during an event at the launch of a pop-up shop filled with goods in Marrs green in Hull, as part of celebrations marking their status as City of Culture 2017 – a title Dundee narrowly missed out on and Perth is hoping to win in 2021.

Annie said: “I had heard about GF Smith’s World’s Favourite Colour competition earlier in the year but just hadn’t got around to submitting my colour.

“It wasn’t until the end of April when I went out on the Pirate Boat trip on the River Tay here in Dundee that I was inspired to pick my colour.

“I became really aware of being surrounded by so many different and beautiful deep hues of green, blue and grey from the water and the sky.

“As soon as I got home I made a cup of tea and settled down to pick the colour.

“Turns out that the world’s favourite colour is a reflection of the landscape that surrounds us. It’s a colour that I’ve always loved and so, to me, its no surprise that it was the favourite – it turns out it’s everyone’s.”

Annie added: “It’s an absolute privilege to have a colour named after me.”

Caroline Till, director of Franklin Till studio and editor of Viewpoint Colour Magazine, said: “In these uncertain times, where political and social upheaval has become the norm, we crave the calming tranquility of green and its association with the reassuring certainty of nature’s cycles.”

GF Smith will now add Marrs green to their colourplan for use by designers and artists.
