Dry flies top bill at Lake of Menteith

-

Some great dry fly fishing can be had in sheltered areas at LAKE OF MENTEITH.

Gateside Bay, Stable Point and Reedy Point have all been mentioned and top fly appears to be the famous yellow owl.

Top tips from anglers on the beach were that if there is a wave fish two or three dries and if it is calm fish two dries and a buzzer to sink the nylon.

Stuart Harrison from Ayrshire had a great day on dries with 19 fish including three over 5lb.

The recent Scottish Club Championships saw 10 clubs competing.

The 30 anglers caught 90 trout with 46 being released. Connor Campbell of Kinross AC netted 14.

Top club was Kinross AC followed by Grizzlecats then Thack AC.

Ken Oliver won the ninth heat of the boat league taking 14 fish off Sam’s point on a floating line using ginger hoppers.

Last year’s winner Brian MacKenzie was second with 11 while Bill Ramage took third with 10 and still leads the league.

MONIKIE and CROMBIE were again affected by the weather, but when the winds dropped there was some excellent fishing.

Generally the fish were not very deep and a sink/midge tip line tended to be all that was needed.

Successful flies included pheasant tailed nymph, sedges, cormorants, bibios, snatchers, cat’s whiskers, small boobies (fished on top of the water) and squirmies.

In general anything with a bit of black and green in it seemed to get fish.

Clubs out included Perth & District ExServicemen with 4½ boats on the Island pond keeping 26 fish for 47lb 8oz; Perth RASC, three boats on the Island pond, returned all fish caught; Monifieth AC, five boats on the Island, kept 31 fish for 53lb; Dundee East End, five boats on the North pond, 34 fish for 59lb 12oz; Arbroath AC, eight boats on the Island, 59 fish for 107lb 8oz; Birkhill AC, with three boats on the North pond, kept six fish for 10lb 8oz.

It has been another good week at FRANDY despite the high winds.

Bob Dick and Jim Sherry (Kinross) kept 10 fish weighing 21lb 8oz and released a further seven; Brian Thorne (Glen Devon), five for 10lb 8oz; Tam Lansdown and George Keith (Dunfermline), four, 7lb 8oz and released a further three.

On the club front Pen-Ex AC kept 17 fish weighing 36lb 8oz; CIBA AC, 23 fish for 47lb 14oz; Western AC, two, 5lb and released 53; Townhill AC, 44, 86lb and released a further 28; Dunfermline Railway AC, 27 for 54lb 1oz and released 28.

The best flies included the bibio hopper, daddy longlegs, sedgehogs, Kate McLaren, sedge muddlers and Loch Ordie.

The Live Line AC had a great day catching 31 fish for 82lbs 12oz at ORCHILL LOCH.

Roy McLaren had the heaviest basket with four fish for 13lb.

Bobby Wilson, at 90 years plus, was back fishing and caught three for 10lb on an Ally McCoist lure.
