Fife joiner takes plunge into property management

-

Spotting a gap in the market led joiner Michael Annandale to set up his own letting business with a difference, moo-let. The 45-year-old’s enterprise started out in Dalgety Bay six years ago, but earlier this year moved into larger offices in Inverkeithing.

What does your business do?

We offer a personal service to both landlords and tenants covering all aspects of property management – from drafting new leases to full management. We are very flexible and will work to ensure we meet our client’s individual needs.

Why did you start in business?

I was running my joinery firm while also managing a number of properties. Because the joinery business was so busy, I decided to transfer a couple of properties to a letting agent but found my tenants weren’t receiving the same level of care. I saw a gap in the market and decided to put my money where my mouth was.

How did you get where you are?

I’ve always had a hard-working ethic and have always been the one in early and last to leave.

I also pride myself on being honest, reliable, and trustworthy which has helped establish some fantastic relationships with clients over the years.

Who has helped you?

Melanie Greenwood, partner in business and life, has helped shape my vision in to the business we have now. Danjel Bugeja, who has looked after and developed all our artwork/websites, and we are very fortunate to have him on board.

Sylvia Conner, our property manager, is phenomenal. Business Gateway Fife, has also been a great help throughout the growth of the business.

Our adviser, Fraser McKee, has worked with us in all aspects of developing moo-let over the years and has been providing salient advice when needed.

What was your biggest mistake?

Not setting up moo-let earlier.

Your greatest achievement?

We recently won the Best Professional Service Provider 2017 at the Fife Retail Business Awards. This took us into Scotland’s Retail Business Awards finals where we were up against the other regional winners, and we were delighted to pick up the winner’s award. Both are very proud moments.

Hopes for the future?

To franchise the business. We are currently putting a package together that would see us do just that.

Do you want to recruit?

Yes. Bringing in the right people as we grow is key to our success.

What is the hardest thing about running your own business?

The start-up stage. The hours and dedication required is underestimated by many people.

Any advice to wannabe entrepreneurs?

Ensure you give yourself time for both work and for yourself. If all you are doing is working in the business then all you have done is created a job for yourself.
