Jamie’s bid ends in round two

-

Jamie Murray’s bid to win his first Wimbledon men’s doubles title ended in disappointment as he and Brazilian Bruno Soares lost to Australia’s Sam Groth and Swede Robert Lindstedt.

The third seeds were looking to add to the Australian and US Open titles they won together last year.

Groth and Lindstedt, however, proved too strong in the second-round tie, winning an epic five-set battle 4-6 6-3 4-6 7-5 7-5.

Heather Watson took some measure of revenge for her singles defeat by Victoria Azarenka by beating the Belarusian in the first round of the mixed doubles.

Azarenka came from behind to beat Watson in the third round of the singles but the Briton emerged victorious less than four hours later.

She and Finnish partner Henri Kontinen, who are the reigning champions, overcame Azarenka and Serbian Nenad Zimonjic 6-3 6-4.

Arbroath’s Jonny O’Mara and his partner Scott Clayton are back in men’s doubles action today.

They play their second-round tie against top seeds Kontinen and John Peers on Court 14 after the Bryan brothers take on Marcin Matkowski and Max Mirnyi in the opener at 11.30am.
