Sainsbury’s backs waste drive
Perth and Kinross Council has secured funding from Sainsbury’s to launch a food waste reduction campaign in Kinross-shire and Blairgowrie.
On average, one-third of the household general waste bins in Perth and Kinross contains food waste.
This waste is destined for landfill but some of it would have still been edible if householders had better information on how to store the food, how to cook it into tasty leftovers, or how to measure portion sizes.
The “waste less, save more” funding will enable new projects and activities to be delivered with householders and schools over the next year in an effort to reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfill and save household money.
Councillor Colin Stewart, convener of the environment, enterprise and infrastructure committee, said: “We are delighted to have secured this funding and the opportunity to work – with the support of local community groups – with local Sainsbury’s stores in Kinross and Blairgowrie to help the two communities send less waste to landfill and save money on their food shopping.”
New, smaller household waste bins were recently distributed to homes.
