100 years ago

Lord Rhondda has appealed to Lord Provost Don, Dundee, to assist him in getting 4,000 women to help in picking the fruit crops in Blairgowri­e and Auchterard­er districts. The appeal was contained in a letter from the Food Controller, in which he further stated that from the beginning of July it is urgent and important that these valuable crops should be gathered in in their entirety. The larger proportion of the fruit is required for making jam for the navy and army.

50 years ago

Dundee Corporatio­n may go into the laundrette business. The Markets and Baths Committee is thinking about providing a washing machine service to replace the Miller’s Wynd washhouse, which is being taken over by the university. Treasurer W.K. Fitzgerald said the washhouse had been losing £6,000 a year. It was obsolete, but there were still about 200 people using the wash-house and it would be inconvenie­nt for them if the service was stopped.

25 years ago

A row has broken out in Tayport over the blocking of a popular route to Tentsmuir Beach which residents claim is a right of way. The route is an unmade road which leads from Shanwell Road to an informal car park at the north of the forest. The four mile long track goes along the edge of the saltmarsh and served the Shanwell Meteorolog­ical Station before it closed. However the track has now been closed off by a padlocked metal barrier. Further discussion­s are to be held on the matter.

One year ago

A massive clean-up operation is under way after this year’s T in the Park drew to a close at the Strathalla­n Castle site in Perthshire. Thousands of revellers trudged away from the campsite through the mud after a weekend of music that saw headliners the Stone Roses, Calvin Harris and the Red Hot Chili Peppers among those entertaini­ng the masses. Now, though, the mammoth task of removing a weekend’s worth of rubbish from the main arena and the camping areas has started.
