Man suffers ‘life-changing’ injuries in east Neuk blast

A man has suffered “life changing” injuries in an explosion in Pittenweem.

The 20-year-old man was handling combustibl­e materials in a garage when they ignited.

An ambulance and two fire appliances, from Anstruther and Methil, were sent to the scene on Milton Road at around 7.30pm on Thursday.

Fire crews administer­ed first aid and oxygen to the man, who suffered injuries to his hands.

The casualty was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment.

It is understood emergency services responded to a report of a “firework explosion”.

However, the exact nature of the explosive materials is not known.

A Police Scotland spokeswoma­n said: “Police in north-east Fife are investigat­ing after a man suffered serious injuries when he was handling combustibl­e materials at an address in Pittenweem on Thursday August 3.

“Police and ambulance staff were called to the address in the Milton Road area around 7.30pm.

“A 20-year-old local male was found to be suffering from life-changing injuries and was taken to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstan­ces but the incident appears to be non-suspicious at this time.

“At no time was there a threat to the wider public.”
