There’s treasure in them thar hills
A charity is calling on families to look out their maps and compasses for a Perthshire fundraising treasure hunt.
Organised by the Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA), the only charity in the country supporting families living with the degenerative condition Huntington’s disease, it will take in some of the most stunning local scenery.
The 50-mile route starts in Pitlochry before heading north to Blair Atholl, west to Tummel Bridge before heading south to Aberfeldy and looping back to the starting point.
Competitors will be asked to carry out a series of tasks along the way, with a variety of prizes on offer.
Huntington’s disease is a genetic condition, with those affected showing symptoms between the ages of 30 and 50.
It causes changes to thinking processes – a type of early onset dementia, loss of muscle control and involuntary movements which lead to loss of speech and swallowing, plus mental illness issues.
As it progresses those affected will need 24-hour care.
It is also hereditary, with each child of those diagnosed at 50% risk developing the disease. There is no cure. The SHA supports families through a team of specialists, a youth support service and a financial helpdesk.
The treasure hunt takes place on Saturday October 14.
