A council chief has slammed the actions of a “despicable” hit and run driver in Perth and stressed road safety measures are being considered.

Councillor Willie Wilson, viceconvener of Perth and Kinross Council’s lifelong learning committee, spoke of his concerns after hearing a 13-year-old boy had been hit by a car in Viewlands Terrace, Perth, on the first day of a new school term.

Police have appealed for information in a bid to track down the motorist, who was said to have been driving a silver or light coloured car at the time of the incident.

A police spokesperson said the boy suffered minor injuries.

Councillor Wilson yesterday said the speed of traffic is a “major concern” around schools.

“The reality is that the Oakbank, Burghmuir and Viewlands area of Perth has a population of between 4,000 and 5,000, consisting of pupils, staff, parents and others — all congregated in half a square mile,” he said.

“It’s despicable that the driver involved here didn’t stop and offer assistance to the pupil.

“We are looking at introducing speed restriction measures around schools in Perth and Kinross, and this includes speed activated signs.

“This is the way to tackle the problem.”

Councillor Caroline Shiers, convenor of Perth and Kinross Council’s lifelong learning committee, added: “This is a timely reminder for drivers travelling near schools. I’m glad that the boy seems to be OK after this but it is an issue that concerns me, and I hope the driver responsible comes forward.”

Anyone with information on the incident should phone police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
