Road safety measures unveiled

New measures designed to keep pedestrians safe on the roads and pavements of Perth and Kinross have been unveiled.

A new puffin crossing has been installed on Perth’s busy Dundee Road, while vehicle activated signs have been introduced in Blackford.

The works are part of a major rollout of road safety improvements across the region, bankrolled by an additional £1 million of funding set aside by the council in June.

The issue of protecting residents from harm has long been a concern within communities, but fears came to a head following the death of Coupar Angus toddler Harlow Edwards.

Several measures have been introduced in her home town – in part thanks to the campaigning of local residents, the community council and her family.

Many other villages and towns have also been calling for improvements on their own roads.

Speed restrictions and new crossings have already been introduced, while the council continues to review a number of identified problem areas.

Council leader Ian Campbell visited the Dundee Road crossing with senior council colleagues and said: “I’m delighted to see the new puffin crossing is operational.

“We set aside additional funding for the implementation of a number of road safety measures as a priority.

“I am extremely pleased with the speed at which the works are being completed.”
