Public’s support is ‘welcome news’, says NFU president
Nine in 10 people believe farming is important to UK economy
An overwhelming majority of the public is actively supporting the farming sector, according to the NFU.
Results from the English and Welsh union’s Farmer Favourability survey reveal nine in 10 people believe farming is important to the UK economy.
In addition, 68% said they had a favourable or very favourable view of British farming and 89% said they thought it was important to have a productive farming industry.
Consumer trust in British produce was also revealed in the findings, with 64% reporting they trusted British food more than the rest of the world and 66% saying they often or always specifically looked for British food when shopping.
Respondents to the survey also showed their support for government help to the farming sector after Brexit – 68% said farmers should receive support to both produce food and look after the environment.
NFU president Meurig Raymond said: “The results of this survey will make for welcome news in the farming sector.
“It’s clear the public recognise the strategic importance of farming in feeding the country, looking after the countryside and contributing to the economy.”
He said the survey results sent a strong message to MPs and decisionmakers that public support was vital to the future of the farming industry.
“This support will be instrumental for the British farming sector in the coming months and years ahead.”
