A man has appeared in court after a rooftop drama which shut down a Perth neighbourh­ood for eight hours.

Danny Stewart is accused of hurling chimney pots and slates while standing on top of flats in Stanley Crescent.

The street was closed off by police throughout Sunday afternoon, while officers in riot gear patrolled the area.

Stewart, 24, appeared in private at Perth Sheriff Court yesterday afternoon.

He is accused of culpably and recklessly, over a period of several hours, while standing on the roof of three neighbouri­ng blocks, repeatedly throwing clay pots and slate at parked vehicles.

Meanwhile, a man has appeared on petition in connection with a separate disturbanc­e in Auchterade­r.

Stephen Bertie is accused of attempting to murder a man at a house in Sydney Crescent. The 29-year-old faces allegation­s he assaulted two other people with a knife or similar bladed weapon.

Crowds gathered at the edge of the cordon and looked on as police in riot gear patrolled the area.

Stewart, 24, appeared in private at Perth Sheriff Court yesterday.

He is accused of culpably and recklessly, and over a period of several hours while standing on the roof of three neighbouri­ng blocks, repeatedly throwing clay pots and slates at parked vehicles.

It is alleged he caused damage to the cars and to the roof, while placing police officers and members of the public on the street below, at danger.

He made no plea during the brief hearing before Sheriff Lindsay Foulis and was remanded in custody.

He is due to make a follow-up appeared in the same court next week.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 10am. A cordon was thrown around block numbers 13, 15 and 17 and members of the public were told to avoid the area.

During the incident, shield-carrying police in body armour were seen escorting residents along the street.

They also collected medication for locals who were unable to get into their homes.

At one point, there were at least 13 police vehicles, including six vans, a dog handler team and an ambulance incident response unit.

The road was reopened at around 5.30pm after firefighte­rs entered the cordoned area with an extendable ladder.

Police later thanked residents for their patience.
