Man had knife during brawl

-

Panicking Perth residents called the police after witnessing a brutal street brawl.

It resulted in an unnamed man sustaining an open wound to his body and a puncture wound to his head.

In the midst of the brawl was Donald Stevenson who had gone out to confront the man.

Within his pocket was a kitchen knife, which Perth Sheriff Court heard he had snapped after realising the decision to carry it was “stupid”.

Stevenson, 38, claimed to have sustained a hand wound after snapping the blade off the handle within his pocket prior to the brawl.

Police officers found the handle in the pocket of his jacket.

Meanwhile, a four-inch blade was discovered in the street having apparently been discarded.

Perth Sheriff Court heard the brawl, in Perth’s Glover Street, had been witnessed by a number of members of the public.

They saw three men struggle in the street and Stevenson throw an item – the blade – to the ground.

All three men – including the man who sustained injuries – declined to cooperate with the police.

Stevenson – described as a prisoner at Perth – pleaded guilty on indictment to a single charge of being in possession of a knife in a public place on June 15 this year.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis jailed him for 34 months.
