Dundee United have signed 19-year-old striker Joe Piggott on a two-year-deal.

Piggott is a product of Everton’s youth academy and played for Rochdale.

The prospect has been training with United recently and played as a trialist in a development game.

Manager Ray McKinnon said: “Joe has impressed us in training. He is a strong lad and has high energy to complement his ability.

“I have no doubt he has the potential to continue his development here and push for a spot in our first team squad in the future.”

United have also been working on bringing in 20-year-old midfielder Mark Waddington on loan from Stoke City.

Waddington would be closer to pushing for a first team place than Piggott.

He spent a short time with Kilmarnock last season and can play a few positions, with central midfield his preferred one.

There was no great rush to complete the deal as it can be sorted out after the window has shut.

Meanwhile, Southampton are unlikely to give up on Jamie Robson, even though their late transfer window interest in the United full-back was rebuffed.

Courier Sport first revealed that the English Premier League club were tracking the teenager as far back as last December, and their scouts have continued to monitor his progress ever since.

Saints previously took United youngster Kieran Freeman down south and were hoping to do the same with Robson.

An offer has been knocked back by the Tangerines, however, with fellow leftback Tam Scobbie currently out of action.

The relationship between the two clubs is a good one, with Harry Lewis and Archie Thomas coming to Tannadice from the south coast.

Robson’s contract runs out in 2018.
