Yet another twist in painful road to Brexit

-

It is tempting to describe the UK Government’s handling of the Brexit process as shambolic.

In fact the rot set in long before Britain’s withdrawal from the trading bloc was confirmed.

Woefully unprepared for a Leave vote, the eventual result of the referendum left our Westminster politicians baffled.

There was, quite clearly, no plan to deal with such an eventuality – a staggeringly complacent situation which, it could be argued, cost then prime minister David Cameron his job. Since the poll, progress on Brexit has been glacial. Yesterday, there was yet another twist in the saga as proposals which could force a post-Brexit cut in the number of low-skilled migrants coming to Britain were leaked.

Sadly, rather than sparking a mature debate, the release of the information instead resulted in the political football being inflated once more.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon gleefully seized upon the dossier, suggesting it was evidence of “moral bankruptcy” on the side of the Westminster Government.

Certainly the leaked document included some questionable proposals – perhaps the reasons behind it being classified as “official and sensitive”. However, the fact is it remains a draft document. Is is too much to hope our politicians take this opportunity to spark a meaningful dialogue, or will they instead continue in their desperate bid to score political points?

Sadly, the answer is already apparent.
