Off-colour Tangerines deserved jeers after poor home show against Sons

- Ianroache

Someone once said: “I’d rather be lucky than good. That someone was legendary New York Yankees baseball pitcher Vernon “Lefty” Gomez.

Old Lefty was good as well as lucky despite what he said, clinching five World Series titles with the men from the Bronx during a long and illustrious career in the 1930s.

Well, Dundee United were definitely not good against Dumbarton on Saturday but they can consider themselves to be lucky.

I’m not only referring to the late free-kick from James Keatings that rescued a point but also their league position.

The Tangerines have been off-colour, to put it politely, in their last three league matches, scraping a narrow home win against Brechin, getting hammered on the road by St Mirren and then managing just a point against the part-time Sons.

That clearly isn’t the form of side that is going to stroll to promotion.

Yet, they still find themselves only two points behind the leagueleading Buddies.

It could have been a lot worse but I’m sure that won’t be of any consolation to the supporters who had to sit through a frustrating and difficult 90 minutes.

The fans let the players know they weren’t happy and the jeers were well deserved. The players should now count their blessings that the gap between them and St Mirren isn’t greater than it is and step up to the plate.
