Numbers up for marathon event

-

A field of 400 runners took part in the sixth annual Highland Perthshire marathon and halfmarathon races organised by the Rotary Club of Aberfeldy and District.

For the first time this year they were joined by 70 participants in a Cycle Sportive on the course through Aberfeldy, Kenmore and the grounds of Taymouth Castle. To round the event off, athletes and families were treated to an evening ceilidh at Aberfeldy Town Hall.

Event director Peter Donaldson said: “It was a fantastic event held in perfect conditions, showcasing Highland Perthshire at its very best.

“Participant numbers were well up on last year and we have had fantastic positive feedback commenting on the organisation, the beautiful route, the tremendous job done by our volunteer marshals and above all the real spirit of enjoyment by all on the day.

“We had over 80 volunteers helping us on the day, and I would like to say a big thank you to them for helping to make the day such a huge success.”

Rotary president John Steele said organisers were indebted to the support of sponsors, voluntary groups, businesses and the local community. Event winners were: Marathon, men – Rich Myers 2.52.06; women – Rachel Newstead 3.03.32.

Half-marathon, men – Lewis Rodgers 1.11.33; women – Catriona Buchan 1.23.02.
