An upbeat atmosphere
Sir, - As a Perth resident who took part in the protest against the SDL on Sunday, I feel that Paul Reoch’s analysis (September 11) does not accurately represent events.
He appears to suggest that it was a case of rival protesters, who he compares to football hooligans.
While there were ‘antifascist’ and ‘left wing’ groups represented, the majority of the anti-SDL protesters were local residents — of all ages, political shades and denominations.
By and large the protest had a very upbeat atmosphere with some amusing signs and high spirits.
It was a very positive experience for the many
children involved, including my own.
Some of the bystanders, far from being shocked, actually joined the protest as it progressed through the city centre and swelled our ranks.
Admittedly, a much smaller number of ‘antifa’ protesters, who I believe were not from Perth, had a more militant attitude but were nevertheless peaceful.
The atmosphere changed dramatically and shouts of “Nazi scum off our streets” erupted, only when the so-called SDL contingent arrived (many of whom had actually come by bus from England).
The fact they were carrying an iron cross flag and were doing Nazi salutes outside our City Hall should have been more shocking to your correspondent than a couple of rude slogans.
The message from the Perth residents was that there is no place for that on our streets.
Some balanced reporting would help to get that message across.
