City centre works will cause delays and disrupt bus services
Pressure on surrounding roads will increase with Kinnoull Street closure
A new programme of roadworks in Perth city centre will continue to cause delays and congestion throughout September.
Stretches of Kinnoull Street will be closed to traffic on a variety of dates before the end of the month.
They are likely to put increased pressure on surrounding roads and will result in significant disruption to bus services.
A number of services will be diverted and unable to serve their usual bus stops, forcing customers to use alternative stances.
Beginning today and continuing until Friday, Kinnoull Street will be closed between Mill Street and High Street.
Then on Sunday, the Kinnoull Street/ Mill Street junction will be closed, preventing buses from serving Mill Street, the city centre’s main bus hub.
One final closure will take place on Sunday October 1 when the High Street/ Kinnoull Street junction will be closed.
Bus passengers are urged to plan ahead for journeys during the works and consult timetables or contact Stagecoach on 01383 660880 if unsure about where to get on and off services.
In addition to that disruption motorists will also have to find alternative routes through the city centre while repairs are carried out.
The works are the latest phase of surface improvements being undertaken on behalf of Perth and Kinross Council.
Phase one brought city centre traffic to a near standstill as work began on Atholl Street – a notorious bottleneck.
During those works, Stagecoach was forced to warn customers of “severe delays” on all services through the city.
Kinnoull Street was then reduced to one lane last week as the first of a series of stretches of road were resurfaced.
Staff at the council’s traffic control centre have been looking at ways of easing congestion by taking extra action such as altering traffic light sequences.
They will hope the latest Kinnoull Street restrictions and subsequent diversions do not result in the same congestion.
