Jensen hat-trick helps Stars past Flyers

-

Swedish forward Jimmy Jensen netted a treble as Dundee Stars edged arch-rivals Fife Flyers 7-5 last night in the Challenge Cup Group B match.

The hosts led 5-1 after the first session, with four goals inside the first seven minutes, and 7-2 after the middle period.

Fife hit back with three goals in the final 20 minutes to put a more respectable face on the scoreline for their travelling fans in the 1,500 crowd.

Malcolm Gould opened the scoring after only three minutes on the power play and it was 2-0 59 seconds later when Chris Lawrence netted.

Left-wing Jensen slotted his first 10 seconds later and netted again on a power play just over a minute after that.

Shell-shocked Flyers hit back from a Liam Heelis power play goal after 12 minutes but Dundee popped in No 5 from Riley Stadel.

It was Flyers who opened the secondperiod scoring through Peter LeBlanc but 29-year-old Jensen scored his hattrick strike just over a minute later.

Johan Andersson made it 7-2 with 34 seconds remaining in the session.

The Kirkcaldy club dominated the scoring in the third period with LeBlanc scoring his second followed by strikes by Carlo Finucci and Chad Smith.

Stars had been denied a double over Belfast Giants on Saturday night.

The Northern Ireland side earned revenge with a 7-4 win over the Tayside team who edged them 3-2 after penalty shots in their first meeting at Dundee.

Flu-hit Stars scored through Jensen, Adam Harding, Andersson and Joey de Concilys.

In Kirkcaldy, three goals early in the final period handed Flyers a 5-2 victory over Edinburgh Capitals.

Giants’ Glasgow-born forward Colin Shields last night iced in his 600th Elite League game and scored one goal and assisted on another in a 6-5 win over Capitals at Murrayfield.
